{The Chicken House}
I live in a neighborhood in California, not a farm, but having chickens is easier than you might think! For food we get them a 50 pound bag of chicken scratch every few months and throw all the scraps from our meals every morning. They run around their area of the yard during the day and around dark every night make their way to where they sleep at night in a little coop my dad and I built for them. They each lay one egg a day during the summer and stop laying all together in the winter for a few months. The eggs are extra bright yellow in the middle (I read this is because they are free range?) and are extra delicious!
And just for the fun of it, here is a picture of Beatrice when we first got her, she was so tiny and cute!

Thank you for sharing these pictures, I bet the eggs DO taste a whole lot better! When I was growing up, we raised pigs and the meat was marvelously out of this world compared to store-bought pork.
That's the cutest chicken house I have ever seen by the way, way cute! :D
Hey, I sent you a message with my email. Thanks so much.
:)
Luv the design on the black and white one. I bet everyone in the coop stops and stares when she walks in!
Day-Dreamin' Optimist: Thanks! It was my play house when I was little and now the chickens love it!
Autrum Doily: I haven't gotten your message, you can just email me at julie.edmonds@yahoo.com
Wee Spookees: Isn't she pretty?? I got her last and I want more!
I love them! Agree that the black and white one is the best dressed! I had a pet chicken when I was a girl and keep trying to convince my husband that we've got plenty of room in the backyard for a coop! Thanks so much for popping over this week. Lovely to "meet" you.
Beatrice looks like a chicken a friend of mine had when we were growing up. Chicky is what they called her. She was there joy. Great fun post
so adorable. i'm jealous of all the sun. x hivennn
I'm so jealous of the sun and chickens! What a great thing to have, especially for children as they grow up:) Just found your blog and love it!
Wowee, I wish I could have fresh eggs like that. Congrats on the coop!
I recently started following your blog and I absolutely LOVE it! Your chickens are so cute! Would it be safe to say there is no downside to owning chickens?
i love that you have chickens! the fact that you made the coop with your dad makes it even more amazing.
this is so awesome! one of my friends just got three chickies for her backyard. she lives smack in the middle of oakland and is loving having a wee garden & now chickens. i had never thought of having them in the city, but it really is pretty easy to do if you have a bit of yard area. it's just so great!
I had a pet chicken when I was a kid! Her name was Darlene. Because I grew up on a dirt road, surrounded by land and cow pastures, she was "free range." When she was ready to be put in her coop at night, she'd peck on our sliding glass door. :)

Leslie: Aren't they funny? That was the most surprising thing about chickens I learned when I got them, they are funny and have personalities!
Thanks for all the nice comments everyone, my chickens will be so happy to hear how popular they were!
