Motivation (or lack of)

Thursday, March 10, 2011

Maybe it is the warmer weather and upcoming spring, or maybe (most likely) the enormous number of amazing blogs, online shopping sites to visit, and beautiful pictures to pin, but I have been having the horrible time getting motivated  to actually do the things I need to get done recently.

I am so close (3 months!) to finishing the class portion of my teaching credential program and I just can't muster the motivation to buckle down and write the endless papers, lesson plans, and class write-ups I need to finish by May. The classes are all self-paced which means if I want to put that paper off another day, or two, or four, I can, and no one will know or care. This mentality is hard to get used to for a girl who just finished 16 years of regular, "do it by Friday or you will fail," school. Does anyone else have this motivation problem or any tips on how you get things done with some many appealing distractions on the world wide web? I could use some advice!

Anyway, while I sit here struggling to put together an 8 page paper on Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences, here are some pictures I found of PM when she was little. Because who doesn't like a kitten on a doily?

that beautiful cat is distracting me!

i used to alwaysput things off. now i realize that being online is my reward for buckling up my pnts, putting on my work gloves making some coffee and kicking some blanking blank,
its twice as enjoyable to relax after youve suprised yourself by getting those things done that youve put off.. i i mean i think you could get all that done in 2 days and then take a week off kind of tear !! :))

Hmm...often I would go to a restaurant or bookstore that had no wifi or wifi I had to pay for (huge deterrent). That way I could sit somewhere and work without distraction.

Oh man...sounds like me. Only I'm in regular "do it by Friday or fail" school. Haha. Last semester of undergrad. Motivation is at an all-time low. I wish I had something helpful to say, but really, I'm just reflecting on the fact that I have two papers due next week that I haven't remotely started on. One requires a lot of research, the other is a thorough book review. Ick.

On a happier note, your cat is SO adorable. I didn't used to be a cat person, but I have to admit they've grown on me over the past few years. Yours is gorgeous. And the doily adds a little something extra. :)

Haha, yep, I know how that goes - having to be responsible for your own timeline in college can really be a killer. Who knew self-discipline would come back to bite you in the butt? Maybe because it's in the middle of the semester, and you're not quite close to May to see all the deadlines pop up?

I love the new pictures of your gorgeous kitty! I just wanna pick it up and cuddle it :)

The computer is a huge time-suck for me, too - especially in the summer when I'm off work (I am a teacher, too). I started setting the timer on my phone, and only allowing myself a pre-determined length of time in front of the screen (usually 45 minutes to an hour). After that, I forced myself to do something productive. Good luck!

The only thing that helps me during similar situation is simply shutting down the computer, TV and keeping the phone away from my sight. That's the only way I can psych myself into becoming productive.

Yes, the "great distraction machine"!! Case in point, I should be doing something else right now.....

What a gorgeous cat!

I think all bloggers have been guilty from time to time (or hour to hour) of getting distracted by all the good stuff on the internet. I try to treat it like an ice cream-you can only indulge once you've eaten your veggies!

I know what you mean about self-paced classes. The education classes that I've taken online have resulted in a decent amount of stress at the last minute! Best of luck! Just remember that all of the things you're learning now will eventually come in handy!

The cat is adorable - I am getting myself a cat from the shelter when I move into my new place. Can't wait!
